Freightliner, a subsidiary of Genesee and Wyoming Inc, is an award-winning rail freight haulier. To maintain their high-quality service, they invested in a multi-million-pound project to build a state-of-the-art railroad locomotive and wagon maintenance and fuelling facility at its Ipswich yard.

Ceetech was particularly proud to be involved in this project as Ipswich is their home town. Freightliner anticipates 20 skilled / semi-skilled jobs to be created in the new facility and intend to use local suppliers for the procurement of materials and equipment.

Following a successful tender, Ceetech was awarded the £900,000 contract for a nine-month project starting in December 2020. Ceetech was contracted to provide the M&E services to the 54-meter-long steel-framed building. The maintenance facility houses an inspection pit, two overhead cranes, and a wheel lathe, as well as supporting offices.

The M&E list was extensive including fire and security systems, EV chargers, ventilation systems, power, data and lighting installation.

The project was not without challenges – although mainly administrative. The Principal Contractor went into administration: Ceetech were committed to the project and switched contractual relationship direct to Freightliner. A working relationship was quickly developed and a successful “partnership” approach to work was created.

Ceetech had strict working protocols in place to manage the risk of COVID-19 but it was inevitable that some operatives had to isolate at periods. To overcome time delays resulting in the switch in management and COVID-19, we constantly reviewed the programme and extended out of hours working to minimise any time delay impact. Ceetech designed bespoke heating controls due to off-the-shelf controls not being compatible with the needs of the project.

Overall, the project was a great success. Ceetech’s excellent project management and communication approach mitigated any challenges.
