OVERVIEW

The University of Hertfordshire is reconfiguring its estate as part of its 2030 Estates Vision.

The aim is to provide more flexible spaces for innovation and learning, facilitating a different way of working and socialising. We had worked for Willmott Dixon on the Institute of Sport building at the University of Hertfordshire. When Willmott Dixon was awarded the contract for The Forum, it made sense for continuity purposes for Ceetech to be on board.

Project

This project was to convert parts of the existing Forum building, originally built in 2009. The space was to be reconfigured into a lecture theatre and two new social areas. The whole project was due to run 43 weeks at a value of 5.45million, with the Ceetech element having a budget of 2million.

On the ground floor, a 250-person lecture theatre was created, with breakout spaces incorporated. This state-of-the-art facility will be a flagship learning space encouraging collaboration and flexible study accommodation for the University. The first floor was turned into an informal bar area, and the second floor, a nightclub. Each social area has a capacity of 500 and can be joined together to host large events if required. The design incorporated improved access, more efficient security controls and provided flexibility to improve student life, both academically and socially.

Ceetech were appointed to Design, Supply and Install the following services:

• Lighting

• Power

• Data

• Fire Alarm

• Security

• Plumbing

• Washrooms

• Air Conditioning

• Ventilation

• Controls

• Insulation Works

Result

We have an excellent relationship with Willmott Dixon, sharing their work ethos and high-quality values. That relationship and proven track record helped the team to manage the challenges along the way. The drawings provided were not 100% accurate so amendments were made and a new process to communicate design changes was agreed going forward.

This project started in October 2020 which meant we had two national lockdowns due to COVID-19 to manage. Employee safety took priority with extra control measures in place allowing work to continue. Sticking to the project timescale became a challenge but one that we met despite the COVID-19 restrictions.

“We share a strong relationships with the Ceetech team. They really share our values and work well with our team, using the same team as Sports Science and have an established relationship. They are very proactive and reliable, with all works completed to high standard.”
